Many years ago, I heard a vort on why we say "shanah tovah u'metukah"--a good and sweet year. What's the difference between something that is "good" and something that is "sweet"? Well, there are things in our lives that Hashem causes to happen, and they're for the good because they're His will, but we may have a hard time seeing that, because we are human and our understanding is finite. Things that are sweet are the good things that Hashem bestows upon us that we can clearly understand as being good. Though everything that happens in our lives is from Hashem, we hope that our lives will be full of things that are sweet, so that we can appreciate the goodness that Hashem is giving us.
That said--I'd like to wish all of my friends and readers a gmar chatimah tovah, and a shanah tovah u'metukah!

May you be given everything that you daven for. Have a good sweet yr..
Oh wow I just heard that exact same vort and fell in love - I've been telling it over to every random person I meet.
True, we must always believe that even when the situation looks bad, it's really ultimately Hashem pulling the strings, and it'll all turn out for the good in some way, etc. Still, it's awfully kind of God to sometimes make things a bit more obviously just, fair, and sweet.
Gmar chasima tova to you, too. Hope your Yom Kippur is a meaningful and smooth one.
Thanks, to you too. I really liked that explanation. It is a big blessing to be able to see and understand that everything is for the good. In the past year i have gone through several hard times and cannot really understand how it was for the good. I know there is a good reason, but it is very hard when you are left in the dark.
Gmar chasima tova, Scraps. May it be a wonderful, inspiring, and positive new year!
Thanks for all of the well-wishes, everyone! Sorry I couldn't check my comments before Y"K.
so why not simply 'sweet'?

Semgirl--thanks, and the same to you!
hisbonenus--yeah, it's awfully nice of Him to make the good things obvious, isn't it?
bella--I know things have been rough for you, and I'm sure I don't know the half of it. It is hard when you don't know why things are happening, and all you can see is the hurt that is coming out of them. I'm here for you anytime.
trw--thanks, you too! :)
sabrale--maybe because even the sunshine burns if you get too much of it? And if you eat too many sweets you get fat. (And yes, I am! :-D )
kasamba--thanks! :)
pragmatician--thanks, glad you enjoyed!
